I think my PCOS is a little different than most Cysters. Here is my story. I got my first period at 12 years old. I didn’t get another one for a few years. When my period would come, it would just be very very light and last forever.

Literally, it would last for months with just spotting or very light bleeding. I told my family doctor about this and she put me on the pill. I also had an ultrasound done of my uterus and ovaries. My ovaries were slightly enlarged and COVERED in cysts. I was told by my doctor that I should stay on the pill and hopefully after regulating my periods for long wnough with the pill, we could try taking me off of the pill and see if my cycle would resume naturally. I continued on OrthoTriCyclene pills for 4 or 5 years.

Every time I got off of it I would bleed for a long long time and then it would stop and not come back again on its own, ever. The only time I could have a period is if I was given a series of pills to induce a period, and then started back on the pill. WHen my periods do come, they are about 3 days, not very heavy.

I have always been very thin. Before I got on the pill, I always weighd around 100 lbs (5’2″ height) I had small breasts and little body fat. When I get on the pill, after a month or two I get some weight gain (around 15 lbs) and my breasts get full. I feel much more “womanly” on the pill.

I have labs done of my hormone levels all the time and my testosterone level is very high, even when I am on the pill. I have hair growth on my face and abdomen. Over the last few years (I’m 24 now) I have noticed a very large increase in the hair growth. I continue to be on the pill. Now I am seeing a specialist who recomended I start taking spironolactone. It’s an anti androgen.

I also started laser hair removal at ideal image. I am noticing a huge decrease in the hair. I think it is a combonation of the drugs and the laser treatments. I feel great about my choice to have the hair removal. Ideal image is very understanding of PCOS. They even provide a lifetime deal where you can go back and get spot treatments (Because with PCOS hormone changes, new hair growth can form) I feel like a lady again, and I don’t have to be embarrassed anymore.

I have a lot of cramping, all of the time, like stabbing pain in my abdomen. It doesn’t matter when, it just happens. I seem to bleed during sex almost every time. When my period does come, it feels like my uterus is falling out. It is very uncomfortable. I have been told I will have great trouble having kids.

I think I suffered a miscarraige last june. I started bleeding when it was not time for my period yet according to my pills. It was very heavy and lots of cramps. I felt something come out, and it was in my underwear. I looked at it, and it was a hollow sack, about the size of a golfball. I’m not sure what it was, but I continued to bleed heavily for about 5 more days, very heavily.

I went to the ER and they did a pregnancy test which came out negative so they said they didn’t think it was a miscarraige. I didn’t know what elst it could be, and I am still very confused. At this time I take Seasonale Birth control pills and spironolactone androgen blocker. I still have a lot of cramping and I have gained some weight. I now weigh 125 at (5’2″ height). So, that’s my story.

  • Hi there,

I too have a similar story. I’ve been on and off BC for the past 8 years and went on originally to help with acne. I went off BC 6 weeks ago and immediately started with myo-inositol supplement and then added d-chiro-inositol about 2 weeks ago. I’m a thin cyster and after being on these supplements, I just got my period for the first time in about 8 years (while off the pill).

Research these supplements. Others have had luck with Vitex supplements. There are natural alternatives out there! I don’t know what the future looks like for me (we’re not TTC), but I feel empowered to have brought it back naturally after so much time 🙂

    Good luck to you…
